FAQ
1. What is Therapeutic Phlebotomy?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is a medical procedure where blood is removed from the body to treat certain conditions. It's commonly used to manage diseases like polycythemia vera, hemochromatosis, and certain blood disorders where reducing red blood cell mass or iron overload improves health.
2. What conditions does Therapeutic Phlebotomy treat?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is used to treat:
- Polycythemia Vera (overproduction of red blood cells)
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
- Sickle Cell Disease (in some cases)
- Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (excess iron in the liver)
It is also beneficial for managing high hematocrit levels and some other blood-related disorders.
3. How much blood is removed during a session?
Typically, about 450-500 mL of blood is removed during a therapeutic phlebotomy session. However, this amount can vary depending on the patient's condition and physician's recommendation.
4. How often do I need Therapeutic Phlebotomy?
The frequency depends on your condition. For instance:
Polycythemia Vera
- Patients may need weekly sessions until hematocrit levels stabilize, followed by less frequent maintenance sessions.
Hemochromatosis
- Patients may need weekly sessions until iron levels drop to a safe range, with maintenance every few months.
5. What are the benefits of Therapeutic Phlebotomy?
- Improves circulation by reducing blood viscosity in conditions like polycythemia.
- Reduces iron levels in cases of hemochromatosis, preventing damage to organs.
- Enhances overall well-being by lowering the risk of complications like stroke or heart disease associated with excess red blood cells or iron.
